Pacifier vs. thumb?

My baby daddies momma says I need to make my son use the pacifier when he tries to suck his thumb or he will get buck teeth. I think that it doesn't matter, either one could cause buck teeth.I think if my son is content, then why should I stick that pacifier thing in his mouth? What do ya'll think?

Pacifier vs. thumb?
Has nothing to do with buck teeth.

Personally I think if he can console himself, then let him.
Reply:only give it to him if he needs it. why give it to a content baby??? if he started sucking his thumb though, i would offer it cause you can always take the pacifier away, but the thumb you can't
Reply:well, I think if he really throws a fit and doesn't like the nuk then let him use his finger, but it is proven that sucking your thumb will cause dental problems. Also, it will probably be easier to ween him from the nuk, hence you can't really take his thumb away lol. But you are his mom and shouldn't let anyone tell you how to parent. Good luck with your baby! :)
Reply:I would suggest a pacifier just because you can take a paci. away you can not cut a thumb off. I have seen kids in like 3rd and 4th grade sucking their thumbs. It can be easier at a younger age nothing to keep up with but it is amazingly hard to break thumb sucking.
Reply:I think hes better off with a pacifier. He cant get buck teeth from a pacifier. also its safer then sucking your thumb and an easier habit to break.
Reply:My parents never gave me a pacifier. I've been sucking my thumb for as long as I remember. I'm 22 years old and about to have a child of my own and I STILL suck my thumb. Of course not as much when I was little, but I still do it. My teeth are perfectly perfect. I've never even had a cavity (knock on wood)

But it can happen so I guess pushing the pacifier instead of letting him suck his thumb may work out better in the long run. You can ween him off his pacifier one day, but if it's the thumb forget it. No matter how much I got yelled at or screamed at I didn't care. All the gross tasting stuff my step dad put on my thumb, well it only took a couple seconds to wipe or suck it off.
Reply:You are the babymamma. You decide. Here's a quote from the link below. However, I sucked my thumb until I was 5 and my sister had her pacifier until 4 and neither of us had bucked teeth. What we DID develop was tongue thrust (more common) but not until adults. That is more likely the cause of buck teeth than thumb sucking. Most dentists are not trained to recognize tongue thrust problems even after they have started to cause shifting teeth!

Thumb sucking causes buck teeth.

True ... and false. Thumb sucking often begins before birth and generally continues until age 5. If a child stops around the ages of 4 to 5, no harm will be done to his or her jaws and teeth. However, parents should discourage thumb sucking after the age of 4, when the gums, jaw, and permanent teeth begin their most significant growth. It is, therefore, after this age that there is a possibility that thumb, finger, or pacifier sucking will contribute to buck teeth.
Reply:your babies teeth are still growing and forming. i will give you and example. some one that has braces has them to stretch and move teeth back to where they need to be buy putting perment pressure to the affected area. a pacifier or thumb works the same way yes it ca give your child buck teeth. if your child sucks on an object offten enough its mouth will mold to it.

it is my opinion to give a pacifier instead it will be easier to throw away when it's old enough to not need something to suck on. with should happen shortly after all the teeth have come in
Reply:The thumb has many advantages: 1) it never falls or gets thrown away [fetch Mommy, fetch! is a great game for pacifiers.] 2) it is soft and conforms to the mouth, so you don't have to look for the pacifier orthodontists suggest 3) combination of stimulation to the mouth by sucking plus the sucking action on the thumb has got to help the baby feel more safe / secure / calm 4) I have never seen a kid continue thumb-sucking through school.

On the other hand, peace is a wonderful thing! Good luck!
Reply:My parents didn't give me or my sister a pacifier.I sucked my finger til I was 13 and it messed up my teeth and my sister had to get braces.I now have a 2 month old and I give him a pacifier when needed.it should be easier to take away when I need to.Good luck.
Reply:My goddaughter sucks her thumb and paci....its fine until she starts getting teeth then try to avoid it
Reply:Well i have both a dummy boy and a thumb boy. i was aganist dummies to begin with but now that my oldest son is 3 and still on the thumb. i say dummy is better. a thumb you can not get rid of and hard to stop.
Reply:my baby is not even born yet and he already sucks his thumb. and if he continues to do so when he comes out then i'm going to let him. i'd much rather have a baby suck his thumb then listen to him cry all night because i can't find his nuk. plus the poor kid is probably going to need braces anyways both his father and i did. plus braces can be caused by both thumb sucking or a nuk or genetics. i never had anything i didn't suck my thumb or a nuk and i still had braces.
Reply:You can always take a pacifier away from a baby when they get too big , the thumb is always there and will destroy his teeth. If you teach him to use the pacifier he won't know to use his thumb. Once the pacifier is gone, it's gone, but the thumb will always be there and you can't take that away
