Why does everyone think that people in the south are hillbillies?

First of all, we dont all have buck teeth. That is probably the most common misconception about southereners. Second of all, incest isn't commonly accepted or taught in our schools. It is done frequently, i'll admit it. And I have, on occasion, experimented with my sisters/cousins/brothers/grandmother, but that was long ago. Third of all, not everyone in the south watches Nascar. Tony Stewart is the devil. Fourthly, Not everyone in the south sits on their porches in the afternoons, strumming our banjoes, and spitting tobacco. And last of all, Trailer homes are not as common as you northfolk think.

Why does everyone think that people in the south are hillbillies?
Ever drive down I-95 toward Raliegh/Durham? You hit the Virginia/North Carolina border and all you see are tractor dealerships and trailer dealerships. Some of the upscale places even sell doublewides. All of the gas stations and truck stops all the way down I-95 to Florida sell Skoal and other brands of chaw. The further south you go, the more pickups you see on the road, especially pickups towing stuff (like tractors). You don't see folks sitting on the porch strumming a banjo - most of them are just sittin', or sittin' and smoking Marlboros and drinking Bud Lite from a can (Bud bottles are a New Jersey thing). The big Daytona track is right across the highway from the airport.





I never knew what a bushhog was until I dated a redheaded hillbilly from lower Alabama. He was related to half his hometown, which was related to the other half of the town. Make's you wonder about that inbreeding thing.....

Reply:You have to live in the hills to be a hillbilly. Some of us are crackers, some of us are rednecks, others are good ole boys. It depends on where you live and what you do for a living. We aren't ALL hillbillies. As a child I secretly longed to be a hillbilly.
