Makes you cleverer, prevents HIV, asthma, excema, cancer, buck teeth..... the list goes on and on.
Propoganda?
Is there anything breastmilk can't prevent of cure?
There are some reports that babies who breastfeed have slightly higher ability to read. Complete breastfeeding (no other foods or formulas) reduces (but doesn't completely prevent) most food allergies (but Mom has to avoid high allergenic foods like peanuts, peanut oil, etc). It reduces, but does not completely prevent asthma and encourages lower jaw muscle development.
While there may be some antibodies against HIV in breastmilk, the virus is also present. There are many, many documented cases of HIV being **transmitted** from mother to baby through breastfeeding. Therefore, breastfeeding is contraindicated if the mother has HIV.
Breastfeeding is also contraindicated if the mother has TB because it can be transmitted so easily through breastfeeding and babies have NO resistance to TB. There is no vaccine against TB that is used in the US.
I am a strong advocate of breastfeeding - don't get me wrong! But while there are definite benefits to breastfeeding, there are some few incidences when breastfeeding should NOT be undertaken!
Cheerio!

Reply:I don't understand why people choose not to feed their child with the most amazingly healthy substance that we've been provided with free! I will definately breat feed my children.
Reply:Propaganda benefits someone - the only ones who benefit from breastfeeding are the mother and the baby. The only reason the government chooses to promote breastfeeding is because it has proven benefits - although whoever told you it prevents or cures HIV or buck teeth was obviously misinformed. Humans are mammals - we are designed to feed our young. While I have no problem with mothers who try to breastfeed and, for whatever reason, have to give up, I take real issue at the selfishness of those who think "ugh - I'm not doing that" and make no effort. Just being pregnant will have changed your breasts anyway - and as far as I'm concerned, you decide to have a baby, you need to understand that you are no longer the most important person in your life anymore, and you do your very best for that baby. If you can't accept that concept, perhaps motherhood isn't for you.
Reply:Don't get me wrong - I'm all for breastfeeding and breastfed my own three children, but there are a small number of conditions which even breastmilk can't help - most notably metabolic diseases like phenylketonuria, which if not treated leads to severe problems.
That's why all babies will get a heel-prick test, and that's also why breastfed babies will be tested slightly later than bottle-fed babies - it takes a little longer for the phenylanaline to accumulate, but it will still accumulate.
Other than that, I can think of only good things about breastfeeding!
Reply:I don't know. I've meet breast feed kids, and they still had problems. So I'm still up in the air about the cure everything deal myself. But if it works, I want them to make a cure for love handles. Why not?!
Reply:Do it if you can, and want to. And don't if not.
Reply:I'm all for breastfeeding and unfortunately had to give up with my baby as he didn't take to the breast as he was born early, and he's is as bright as a button considering he was a premature baby. But I know children who have been breastfeed until they were 10 months and they all have problems between them e.g asthma, eczema etc. I'm aware of the benefits but i think it only benefit's some children.
Reply:breastmilk is there for a good reason its made exactly to our baby's requirements, i have 4 kids all breastfed, they have never had an illness, asthma etc, they have had a couple of colds and bumps and scrapes, they are 10, 8, 8 and 4, they are very healthy and i believe it was down to breastfeeding them, my mate has 5 kids who weren't breastfed they all have asthma, chest infections etc, unhealthy. even 1 out of my 4 i would have maybe expected one to be a bit unhealthy but they're not. my answer speaks for itself. i'm not against mothers who bottle feed its a very personal choice.
Reply:It does have all those benefits, their is not a direct link between breastfed babies and their intelligence but it certainly helps to prevent chest problems and D+V etc.
