My son's thumb sucking is so bad he is getting rough,red skin, how do I stop it?

He will be 3 in April and has been sucking his thumb since he was about 1. It use to be only at night when he was trying to go to sleep. Now he does it in the truck, or when he is watching cartoons. I don't want him to have buck teeth(it can happen, a girl I went to school with had them because of her thumb sucking) and I don't want other children to make fun of him when he starts preschool in Sept. What can I do? Please help!!

When I was little I sucked my thumb. I probably started sucking my thumb in my mothers womb for all I know. But I remember what she did to stop it. She bought this nail polish that you put on that gives your nails a bad taste so you wont chew them. It's not harmful if ingested so it could work for your son as well. Once he puts his thumb in his mouth and he notices the taste is bad it should stop. As for the buck teeth I don't think thumb sucking is the main cause for it. My brother sucked his thumb until he was 12 and he has beautiful teeth. Good luck!
Reply:Ohhh, ouch! Tricky one! There is medicated stuff you can put on his thumb nails to make him stop, the falvor is horrible, i htink you can ask your pediatition or a drug store would have it too. Another alternative is tell him everyday he does not suck his thumb you'll give him a treat. Good luck!
Reply:They have topical stuff that you can put on, so it tastes bad to make him stop. Or my Latina friend used hot sauce,that worked like a charm.
Reply:The way I stopped my daughter from sucking her thumb was to put a sock over her hand and tape it on. Dont put the tape on the child's skin, just place it on the bottom of the sock. She resisted at first but after awhile she was coming to me to have her sock put back on after her bath and after meals. I had to use it for about a month but it worked and she hasnt done it since. It has been almost a year now. Just make sure to keep it on at all times except for meals and baths. Good Luck!
Reply:if you believe in spanking then here goes tll him that if he puts his finger in his mouth he will be spanked. and if he gets upset at you because he thinks your mean tell him that you spank him because you love him. and it is true cause your trying to stop him. it worked with my child! also tell him that he could get sick
